ALPACA

Alpaca Fiber
The Making of Alpaca Fiber

Alpaca fiber is one of the world's most luxurious natural materials, softer than cashmere, warmer than wool, and naturally hypoallergenic. Our alpaca fiber is sourced from small, family-run farms where the animals roam free and are treated with the utmost care and respect.

The Beginning
Ethical Care & Climate-Beneficial Stewardship

In garments where alpaca is used, it reflects a commitment to ethical care and mindful sourcing. The farmers we partner with are part of a Climate Beneficial™ system, a holistic verification that supports farm-traceable transparency while actively restoring ecosystems and strengthening U.S. farming communities.

These farmers steward their land regeneratively, nurturing soil health, biodiversity, and natural water cycles. Alpacas are raised on open pastures, allowed to graze freely and live in alignment with their instincts. Their wellbeing is never rushed or compromised but rather honored through mindful care, spacious environments, and a deep respect for the land they call home.

Annual Shearing: A Necessary Act of Care

Once a year, alpacas are gently shorn. This process is not only humane, it is essential for their health and comfort. Without shearing, their fleece would continue to grow, becoming heavy and potentially harmful. Skilled hands carefully remove the fiber in a calm, low-stress environment, ensuring the alpaca remains safe and at ease throughout the process.

Sorting & Hand Selection

After shearing, the raw fleece is laid out and thoughtfully sorted. Each fiber is examined by hand, where sticks, hay, and coarse strands are gently removed. This step is slow and intentional, allowing only the softest, highest-quality fibers to move forward.

Washing with Care

The fleece is then washed using gentle methods to remove dust, dirt, and natural oils. This process is done with care to preserve the integrity and softness of the fiber, never rushed, never stripped of its natural beauty.

Carding: Aligning the Fibers

Once clean and dried, the fibers are carded. This step softly brushes and aligns the strands, transforming them into a smooth, continuous web. It is here that the fiber begins to take on new form, organized, refined, and ready for its next stage.

Spinning into Yarn

The aligned fibers are then spun into yarn. Through skilled hands or mindful machinery, the fibers are twisted into strong, breathable, and luxuriously soft strands. Each thread carries the story of its origin... earth, animal, and artisan intertwined.

Natural Dyeing (When Color Is Chosen)

If color is introduced, we turn only to nature. The yarn is dyed using plant-based elements... flowers, bark, leaves, roots, seeds, acorns, and earth-derived minerals. Each hue is a reflection of the natural world, subtle and alive. No synthetic dyes, no toxins, only colors that honor both the fiber and the skin it will touch.

Swatching & Fabric Testing

Before becoming a garment, the yarn is carefully knitted or crocheted into swatches. These samples allow us to feel, test, and understand how the fabric moves, stretches, and rests. This step ensures that every final piece meets our standard of comfort, durability, and intention.

Crafting the Garment

Only then does the garment come to life. Each piece is knitted or crocheted with purpose, never rushed, never mass-produced. This is slow fashion in its truest form... thoughtful creation, rooted in quality over quantity.
